Should You Get a Second Opinion about Having Surgery?

If you’re not sure what type of surgery to have after discussing it with your surgeon, then you should consider a second opinion. The doctor won’t be mad at you if you do so, and some health insurance companies require a second opinion. When you seek a second opinion, go with someone who is not in the same practice group as the first surgeon, so you can obtain an independent opinion.

Questions to Ask Yourself about Surgery

The National Cancer Institute recommends that before you decide about your surgery, you ask yourself the following questions:4

What kinds of surgery can I consider? Is breast-sparing surgery an option for me?

How will I feel after the operation? Will I need to stay in the hospital?

What are the risks for surgery?

Where will the scars be? What will they look like?

If I decide to have plastic surgery to rebuild my breast, how and when can that be done? Can you suggest a plastic surgeon for me to contact?

Will I need to do special exercises to help regain motion and strength in my arm and shoulder? Will a physical therapist or nurse show me how to do these exercises?
